Second Annual King Film Festival

The Boy King (1986) will be shown at 5:00 p.m. It focuses on young Martin Luther King Jr.’s early encounters with prejudice and how the love and courage of his family moved him to speak out against segregation and become a leader in the civil rights movement.

The classic Daughters of the Dust (1991) was written , directed and produced by Julie Dash.  It will play at 6:15 p.m.  It was the first feature film directed by an African-American woman distributed theatrically in the United States. This tells the story of three generations of Gullah women in the Pezant family in 1902 as they prepare to migrate to the North.   It won awards at  several film festivals, including Sundance.
