Documentary Film Series with Davon Teat

Two documentary films will be shown today.   The first, The Legacy of Pocahontas Island, tells the story of the oldest black community in the US; the running time is 23 minutes.  The second film is Nubian Spirit; it describes the African legacy of the Nile Valley and runs 73 minutes.

The Kent County Arts Council has produced audio recordings of original and classic poems to be released daily, with a different reader and poem for every day of the Smithsonian Exhibitions’ stay in Kent County. Sumner Hall will be open to the public for 30 hours per week during the exhibition.  The Smithsonian’s The Way We Worked traveling exhibition will be displayed on the second floor of Sumner Hall along with a “Hands On” Kids’ Corner.  The first floor will feature locally produced exhibition, The Black Labor Experience in Kent County: Free and Enslaved; Founders and Soldiers; Tools of the Trades and Contemporary Work Stories.

Circle Build Program Retreat

Eastern Shore Psychological Services has been providing support to children of incarcerated parents and their caregivers through the Circle Build Program.  This retreat is intended to identify and address trauma in individuals, families, and groups which have been impacted by incarceration.  Compass Regional Hospice is partnering with Eastern Shore Psychological Services to facilitate activities that promote processing emotions and healing. The Local Management Board of Kent County is funding the activity  through a grant from the Governor's Office for Children.

Sumner Hall will be open, as usual, from 11:00 am - 2:00 pm.   In addition to the regular exhibitions, we will show a video recording of the live performance, Choppin' at the Shop, an original production by Marlon Sanders.  This  premiered in at the Garfield Theatre in Chestertown in May, 2017.  Light refreshments will be served.  Honor the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by learning more about African American History and Culture at Sumner Hall!

Cultural Competence is a set of values, behaviors, attitudes and practices that enable individuals to work effectively with others from different cultures and traditions.   Facilitated by Michelle Johnson, a faculty member of the Department of Education of Washington College, this session will enable participants to examine their own attitudes and values.
