Legacy Day – a festival that celebrates the rich cultural heritage of African Americans in Kent County – has occurred each August for the past eight years. It is offered free of charge to the public, thanks to the sponsorships of individuals and organizations.
Each year, the Legacy Day Committee selects a theme and builds a full day of experiences around it. In addition to an exhibit at the Bordley Building, everyone enjoys the parade; special art exhibits; an outdoor dance party along with vendors offering food, drinks and crafts. Many participants also attend the Genealogy Workshop and Gospel Concert that is offered each year.
In 2020, Legacy Day was a virtual event, due to the national health emergency caused by COVID-19. Legacy Day 2021 will be a combination of in person and virtual offerings. It will honor Kent County’s Outstanding African American Athletes of the 20th Century.
Legacy Day is produced by Sumner Hall with the Historical Society of Kent County
